My Breastfeeding Diary : Freezer & Fresh Milk and EBM for nursery

I’d started expressed my breastmilk since day 5 of confinement. Most of my EBM were place into liner. Alhamdulillah I’d managed to have almost 30packs of EBM in liner and 20 bottles of EBM before started working. Each liner and bottle I’d put approximately 3oz – 5oz.

What is the pro & con using liner to storage breastmilk:
Pro :

  • Minimize space usage in fridge
  • Easily sealable (zipped lock style), Pre-sterilized
  • Practical if you on travel/mobilise.

Cons:

  • Easily expose to contanimations during transmission from liner to milk bottle
  • Not recyclable
  • Difficult to arrage in fridge, untangled

What is pro & con using bottle to storage of breast-milk
Pro

  • Less contamination
  • Recyclable
  • Convenience , directly drink after warm up the bottle.

Con

  • Used a lot of space in fridge.
  • Not pre-sterilized

My freezer stash

This photo was taken a day before i started to work. Half i put in my fridge and another half was placed at MIL’s fridge..

My fresh milk

Fresh milk will be frozen after 2 days

EBM for nursery

From 730am to 6pm, Widad will drink 6 times, 3oz persession. This is how i managed my EBM for nursery.

  1. I’ll took 4pcs of EBM from my freezer stash and thaw it. The reason why i’d took 4pcs of EBM is because according to Dr Sears we need to used the oldest ones first then used the recently pump. However, it is most recomended if we could give the fresh milk to our baby. That why, i’ll take 4pcs of EBM from my freezer stash and 2 from fresh milk stash.
  2. I’ll took another 2 pcs of fresh breastmilk (breastmilk that been expressed a day before)
  3. After thawing the freezer EBM, I’d put them into the bottle. Each bottle I will do numbering. 1, 2, 3 & 4 for EBM from freezer stash and the last two for fresh milk will be number 5 & 6 – This numbering system is to help Widad’s caregiver to easily pick which milk goes 1st without check its label.
  4. After finished pouring EBM in liner into bottle and finished numbering, I’d put them into cooler bag and ready to nursery for Widad’s meal of the day

Thawing the frozen milk in a basin

This is my numbering system – easy for Widad’s caregiver to pick which milk goes 1st

Arrange nicely in cooler bag

Covered up with ice pack.. and ready to go

Huda – Good job with the numbering system! :D It’s really “idiot-proof”.

Just a question, do check and confirm ya, but isn’t EBM supposed to be frozen immediately? That way, the EBM can last for 2 months.

If I’m not wrong, EBM stored in the fridge (not freezer) must be consumed within 48 hours (2 days). The process should be:

    EBM —> freezer = 2 months
    EBM —> fridge = 2 days
    EBM —> room temperature = 1 hour

The numbering system is really “idiot proof” yet, its the simplest way to help the caregiver to handle EBM properly.

Thru my reading and the breastfeeding preparation class that i’ve attended, the instructor said the EBM in the fridge can last for 2days. If the baby do not consume that EBM, you can transfer the EBM to freezer part and last for 2months.

    Hi Kittycat,
You are not supposed to freeze the EBM immediately. let it cold in the fridge (i usually put 1 hr) then put into the freezer if you have decided to keep it for longer.

As for the duration to keep the EBM in malaysia room temperature, the government clinic says till 4 hours. As for my experience, 1 hour is good enough. It all depends on the temperature and also the age of baby.

If new born, try to careful. I usually keep unfinished EBM in a warm thermos so that it may not be contaminated.

Kitty, you are very hard working in putting up the images. My blog http://swling.metakm.com/journey does not have many images cause I am a bit lazy :)

thanks for sharing the info. As for me, the nursery normally wait until 4 hrs if my daughter not finished her milk and will discard after that.

for my EBM, once I finished expressed it, I will put inside the cooler bag with 3 ice packs and once I reached home around 630pm, I will immediately put inside the fridge.

Why can’t we freeze the fresh EBM immediately after
pumping? I thought that freezing it immediately is the best way to
    retain its freshness. Thanks.

    Hi!

I chanced upon your blog and loved reading your entries!

I’m a mother of 2 boys and I’m from Singapore. Like you, I have loads of breastmilk and had storage issues.
I started bringing in some breastmilk bags from Korea for my own usage and now, it has developed into a small business as my friends simply love the milk bags too!

I am looking for photos of breast milk storage to use in our mini video advertisement (for event purposes and for Facebook/website). I am interested to use your photos and would like to have your permission. I will credit you and/or your blog (whichever you prefer) in our video advertisement.

I hope to hear from you soon!

    Do email me! thelittleonesinmylife@gmail.com. Thanks!
