Baby Dino Come Alive at Smart Kids 2011

Smart Kids 2011 was held at PWTC. We reached there around 3pm and immediately went to registration counter to get the boarding pass. This also entitled us for lucky draw worth RM10K of gold. Who know we might be 10K richer end of the day.. huhuh

There are many exhibitors participate in this events like: Dutch Lady, Pusat Sains Negara, CIMB Junior, Vitagen, Suski Sakea, Powerroots, Hasbro Toys etc. Promotion on early educations, educational toys, foods for baby, insurances, talks were going on with exciting activities on each booth. Mascots, balloons, sales marketers, insurance agents were everywhere taking the opportunity to promote their products. It’s quite annoying however, I manage to turn away from the marketers especially from those who selling the series of expensive books like Grolier.  Whenever I passed by the booth and they started to do the talking, I just mention to them ” Oh ni adik(Widad) saya. sambil menolak stroller “. huhuh.. They just ignore me and went to another potential customers.. huhuh.

The Mascots

All of the booths, Amirul enjoys the most at Pusat Sains Negara. There is a baby dino alive at this booth and Amirul really fascinate it. The baby Dino look so real and we asked them whether the baby Dino is for sale. Unfortunately it’s not. The  baby dino is as tame as a little kitten where he sleep if tired and wake up when he feel like playing.

Amirul excited watching the baby Dino

Speech Therapy Diary : Increase Auditory Memory Skill

Before staring new activities, the therapist revised what been learnt previously. Alhamdulillah, Amirul managed to do it well and still need more practice.

Correct Words Pronounciation
The first activity, the therapist taught Amirul to pronounce correctly. If Amirul pronounce correctly, he will be rewarded with one block to put into the basket. Using this block, Amirul was introduced with open & close concept as well as shape. Firstly, the therapist knocked the basket lid 3 times and said Open. After she took out all the blocks, she close the lid and said Close. The objective of this to introduce Amirul Open & Close concept. After that the therapist corrected Mummy’s pronunciation.

One and All Concept
Similar to last week activity but using different educational tool aid. Amirul still having difficulty to differentiate between One and All. I had to become role model and took all small chips from the therapist’s hand, just to make Amirul understand what is All. She told me, if I want to make it Amirul understand, I need to practice the same thing repeatedly.

Flash Cards & Two Steps Instruction
Flash card is a MUST activity for Amirul. The easiest way to increase Amirul vocabulary counts and introduction of new words. Out of 4 animal’s flash card, Amirul recognize two of them. In addition, the therapist is also testing the understanding of two instructions at once. She gave him 2 small stones and instruct him to match the with two pictures. Amirul needs few seconds to process the instructions and execute it.

What we need to do:

Self Talk
To encourage Amirul to talk and add new words to his vocabulary, I need to do more self talk. Self talk in another word is story telling. Besides taking a story book and start do all the story telling thingy, another option is tell Amirul what I am doing. Get Amirul involved in my daily choas and explain to Amirul how’  is the thing done, decribe to Amirul things that I used to do words. For example :

Situation : Clean up Amirul’s toys
Amirul come help mummy clean up the toys. Amirul has so many toys. Amirul please put back your toys inside the red basket. Look Amirul, mummy found your dinasours, chicken, cat, tractors. Amirul how cat sounds.. miow..miow.. Amirul, cat has two eyes. Amirul also has two eyes. Amirul how chicken sounds krok..krok..krok.. etc By describing all those animals and how to perform task, indirectly we introducing Amirul with new words.

Make simple sentence using flash card
Take 3 flash card containing 3 objects and create simple sentence with it.

subject + verb+object
Example : Dinasour wears shoes

Swimming with your Baby & Toddler

Yeay I can swim now. Every weekend I’ll bring the whole family to swimming pool at Kelab Tasik Putrajaya, Precinct 8. This is private pool that only open for members. Swimming with baby and toddler is quite troublesome and challenging.

First thing you need  to make sure they are in good mood. Like Amirul, he need almost 30minutes to heat up himself to go into the pool while Widad we can immediately put her in the pool. Put the exciting mood by splashing the water or bring along their bath toys or any swimming tools aid like board, float. Do not drag them and put in the water, they may feel phobia and trauma. Don’t forget to make sure they already eaten before go to swim. Swimming makes babies hungry.

Don’t forget to bring this :

  • Bottle feeding  necessities : Milk, Warm water, Bottle
  • A towel
  • A snack
  • Appropriate clothes (I usually bring sleeveless shirt. Widad and Amirul use to sweat a lot after swimming)
  • Diapers
  • Swimming tools aid : float, board, goggle
  • Sunblock

Amirul ready with his float

Widad ready to dive in

Be Healthy and Keep Fit

Successfully went to gym during lunch hour. 15minutes of sweat yet it’s mean a lot to me. To start something good really take me full of effort. Wanna make it as routine during Friday lunch break. Insya Allah

Sibling Rivalry : Abang & Adik Going to Nursery

Abang and Adik going to nursery, and this is what happened during 15minutes distance.

Amirul loves his sister but he also loves to

  • Tease his Adik
  • Listening to Adik’s tears
  • Tug-of-war toy spats, backseat pinching

However, I found this sibling rivalry is positive things. When competition is happened, its mean they(kids) are actually try to attract parents’ attention. They competes to define who they are as individuals and want to show that they are separate from their siblings. For Amirul case, he wants to show that he is Abang. Abang is powerful like Ultraman (what Airul said). They want to be loved uniquely and special attention from us

Therefore, as a parent, no biased or comparison among children. I also hate if people compare me with others. Avoid having favorite child syndrome and give each child individual attention. Encourage teamwork and teach them about giving and sharing concept.

Although Amirul loves to tease Widad, but if I want to leave Widad, he must be crying.. Sayang Adik yea Amirul

Obesity Among School Children in Malaysia

Obesity among the school children suddenly become an issues after Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, risen up the problem. Despite the fact that, this problem has been long become a concern but neglected by us. Children who are obese normally emotionally and psychological effected besides of life-threatening illness .

Suffer from teasing by their peers, discriminated from family and friends, low-self esteem and depression among the psychological effect for these obese children. While stepping to adulthood, the possibility of becoming fat and getting diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are high.

To avoid thing getting worse, there are various suggestions and recommendations were forwarded to address this problem include:

  • Listing Body Mass Index (BMI)  in their report card. Kindly be inform that BMI use form children is differ from adults.         (Source : The Star)
  • Prohibit small hawkers selling junk foods near the school area. (Source : The Star)
  • Prohibit junk foods like carbonated drink sold at school’s canteen (Source : Berita Harian )
  • All school children need to undergo fitness test (Source : The Star)
However to my opinion :
  • Healthy and Nutritious Foods Starts from Home
As parents, we should play important role in feeding the children. We should closely monitor what goes in our kid’s tummy. No doubt there are some mothers who love to cook and feed the whole family with great food. Thus, we shall have to eat healthy food by the food pyramid.
  • Promote Healthy Lifestyle, Avoid Sedentary Lifestyle
We are now bombarded with so many gadgets like Ipad/Ipod, Wii Nintendo, PsP etc. We forget to introduce all the childhood games like galah panjang, tuju selipar, lompat tali to our kids. Forget about sweat but only air-cond condition with junk foods on table.
  • Become a Role Model to Children
In order to promote a healthy lifestyle and eating nutritious foods, we as parents has to start first. Cook homemade foods instead of buying outside or fast foods. Bring along children to exercise . Children are good observer, they imitate what we do.
  • Junk Foods only once a month
Junk foods only allow once a month in small quantity not a daily foods. Alhamdulillah, Amirul tak teruja bila nampak ice cream, chocolate.. tapi still gigi rongak , gara-gara gigit puting susu masa tido..

My healthy and active baby

The Guilty Feeling Of Parents

Natalie Bahm wrote:

I think it’s impossible to be a parent and not feel guilty every now and then. Being a parent is hard and it takes SO MUCH TIME and ENERGY. It’s physically impossible to accomplish everything I need/want to do everyday in 16 waking hours. I often feel overwhelmed.

Yes.. I feel the same way. Parenting needed to be constantly ready for your children when they need something. For my 3-yo son, he needs me because he wants my presence so he could show something he is good at or he wants me to watch him playing choo choo train.

As for my 1-year old baby girl, I have to look after her to avoid her from touching electrical plug, fragile items, and sharp-edged furniture. Both of us working and sometimes we have no time to ourselves.

The easiest solution is to hire a maid, and she will take over your relief. Your fatique will be gone and so with the bittersweet of being a father.

Dasar Keluarga Negara: Ke Arah Pembangunan Institusi Keluarga

DKN is a policy that requires the stakeholders to give high attention on family perspective in every programme planning and strategy
Resilience is better understood as both the capacity of individuals to navigate their way to the psychological, social, cultural and physical resources that sustain their well-being, and their capacity individually and collectively to negotiate for these resources to be provided and experienced in culturally meaningful ways

Akhir Kata;
