A Journey Through Pregnancy & Beyond Workshop : Nutrition for Stronger Child

Nutrition for Stronger Child by Ms Chang Sau Fun, Dutch Lady Nutritionist

A comprehensive talk by Ms Chang. Among the contents of her talk are :

  • Basic Personal Hygienic Practices for child
  • Physical Activities to maintain healthy lifestyle for child
  • Quality Sleeping Times which help child to grow strong and stay healthy
  • The importance of Nutritious Foods
  • Water is important for child
  • Benefits of Prebiotics & Probiotics for child

Parent needs to teach their child with basic personal hygiene like washing hands before meals, taking bath at least twice a day, always keep the fingernails short & clean and always wear covered shoes while playing outside. Beside that, a child also need sufficient sleep for their healthy growth. The amount of sleeping time reduce proportional to the age.

Having physical activities 3 times a week is highly recommended. Jump, run or swim with your child. Your child stay active and your can keep fit. However, don’t forget to ask you child to drink plenty of water. Water excrete the waste products from the body and maintain body temperature. Variety of foods which provide various of nutrients for child is very important. Balance foods can enhance child’s immunity system.

A Journey Through Pregnancy & Beyond Workshop : Child Development Milestone

The 1st talk was about child development milestones from Dr Rajini. The talk was very informative and interesting. Dr Rajini had mention about each child is an unique item and they have their on way to catch up new milestones. However, they are a range of time before they can categorize as delay. Knowing generic milestones helps identify children at risk of development problems.

They are factors which affect child development:

  • Genetics (eg: Speech delay)
  • Nutrition (eg :  Obesity can be detrimental)
  • Health ( eg: Ear infection  can affect hearing and hence speech
  • Environment: (eg: watching tv can affect child’s attention & learning of language)

One important key that Dr Rajini emphasis is NO tv for kids under 2 years old. Restrict them from watching tv by doing fun activities together. You can either ask them to join in your activities or you join them doing their activities. Its the parent-child interaction that  stimulate child development.

Many research studies have done about the bad effects of watching tv among under 2 years old children.  Instead of letting tv to babysit our kids, lets start doing activities together like; play hide and seek, story telling, coloring, etc.

“Pediatricians should urge parents to avoid television viewing for children under the age of 2 years. Although certain television programs may be promoted to this age group, research on early brain development shows that babies and toddlers have a critical need for direct interactions with parents and other significant caregivers (eg, child care providers) for healthy brain growth and the development of appropriate social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Therefore, exposing such young children to television programs should be discouraged.”(AAP Policy)

Apple and What Mother Can Learn From This Successful Company

Photo: Reticulating

Wherever Apple goes, everybody follows . Everyone is mesmerised — every time they put their new invention in their shelves– with ‘ooo’, ‘aaa’, and ‘wah’. People just can’t stop praising for what the apple has contributed to the world of technology. They drive innovations and no one can stop them.

The adopt the habit of the leader.
It may be exaggerated to call Apple, leading innovator. Not all awesome gadget apple invented. But, recently, a few years back, they really nailed down the mobile industry with the touch revolution, UI simplicity, sleek design. They shake down the world, awaken the giant phone leader: Nokia is on the burning platform right now — Yes, they have been the leading market share for some time, but they too lazy to advance themselves. Enough for the talk, lets drill down further what are the good things, that mother can adopt with the Apple empire?

[1]Independence.
Apple  doesn’t rely on others when they to pursue their mission. Their vision is enough to realize what they want.

So with mommy.

A good mother would always appreciate the visibility of their husband. But, a great mother doesn’t need a husband to be around her.  That’s why single mom is always the strong one. You can just drop her in any island and she survived.

[2]To heck with other people’s thinks.
Apple flush down the flash from their IOS operating system. And the consumers were strongly against their decision. But, Apple stands with where they are and doesn’t need others to understand.

So with the mom.

If people criticize of how you raise your children, just ignore them. They don’t understand the way you understand your children’s demand — there’s no right and wrong about raising them, so long they are healthy and strong, and loved.

[3]In house production.
-own processor, ios, distributor. Apple assembles their own hardware, make their own processor, orchestrates  their own operating system, open their own online stores, and controls the hardware’s distribution. They blends out forward and backward strategy.

Same goes with the mom.
It’s good to cook your own baby food, knitting your own clothes, DIY toys, and other make-it-your-own products and items. And home schooling is better than typical formal school system.

[4] Game Changer
Apple don’t follow. They lead. For an instance, I realized that everyone wants to put pinching method on screen in every pieces of screens, like apple did on iPhone oringinal. Now lets look into the tablet indusry. Before that, the industry is the sahara dessert — everybody thought it was unprofitable. When the apple jumped in and introduced iPad and make money, other competitors produced wanna-be-ipad-like tablet and make surroundings like a warzone.
Same goes with the mom.
Modern mom is always a leader. And She doesn’t follow. She leads. As the way the she leads her children on their development: learn faster, grow up , follow instructions, always be cheerful, play actively, and all. Just don’t give up if your children don’t want to listen to you. Restrategize. Make sure your children know who the boss is.
[5]Simplicity
Simplicity is the new beauty. You witnessed how the apple bring the world to his knees. Their products and apps — as well as — Operating system are all about simplicity and usablity. The people bought by it.

Same goes with the mom.

Make rules  to be simple, organized, and easy to follow : playing, eating and sleeping routinely, turn off TV when dinner’s time, eat only on the table, organize your own toys after playing, and all.

Apple story is a good account to learn, analyze, and adopt their leadership skills into the parenting world. In today’s fast-paced and ever changing environment, parent have to drilldown their own brain to get the best method in building the development of the children.

Parenting Catfight : Tiger Moms Vs Funslobs

Photo: Massdistraction

We heard tiger mom parenting before, now also heard about Selfish Reasons To Have More Kids — both styles are playing contrary with each other. While the other said that strict tiger-like parenting style is effective, another one proclaimed that raising kids with fun and fancy is better.

The article is detailed with two parenting stands and perspectives — comparing and analyzing  – where both styles have its own advantages and disadvantages.

For me, parents should decide what’s best for their children. If they think the tiger is needed in the family, then they should take Amy Chua’s step. Follow Bryan Caplan’s advice, if they think their children is way better off with fun and less rotan.

Autism: Mom on Mission

Has a son with austism carry heavy weight on your shoulders. This mom taking years to admit that she has the son with disability, after loses sleep, tears in her eyes . Even every birthday party is a bite of sadness — he becomes more and more challenging when he grows up.

We know that, Preston, her adorable son, is:

  • Not like normal autism – no genius, but he is the higher-functioning end of autism.
  • Has a speech delay and language impairment, communication difficulties,
  • Difficulties in translating what he knows in conversations, while he is rich in vocabulary
  • Lack of social skills, but his heart is so desperately desperately want to friends with people.
  • He make eye contact, laugh. Unlike any other autism person
  • He, was once, screamed all day, everyday, frustrated by his inability to communicate and unable to control his feelings.
Of course, we need a team — partners, brothers, sisters, and our mother as well — to develop improvement on autism disability. It’s suicide if we do it all alone, sharing with friends is better, it helps you to get out of sadness.

Widad Milestones : 13 months old

My Little baby entering her toddler world!!!

Widad 13 Months old milestones :

  • Still walking like robot. Fallen down from stairs twice, loves to climb up the furnitures (sofa & tv rack)
  • Widad quite good at making her desires known without much vocabulary.   e.g: hold her hand out reaching for foods – she wants to eat, lift up mummy’s t-shirt – she wants to drink milk, holding up the hand – she wants us to carry her
  • Widad understands the simple language that we use around her. e.g: Widad kiss mummy – open her mouth and kiss, Widad hug mummy – laying down on my body, understand the meaning of NO – she will cry after that, if you asks something from her hand, she will give you, do not snatch from her
  • Drinks from a cup with assistant
  • She tries to lift heavy things – take 1L bottle water from stroller and give to daddy
  • Imitates others – always imitates what Amirul does

  • Pushes and pulls toys while walking

Speech Delay is A Test of Patience [Speech Delay]

Photo:  Deep Shot

My eldest son can’t speak clearly. Now it’s been 40 months. Of course, he can make sentences, in his mind. But when he wants to get it out of his mouth, he leaves us in wonder — what does he really want?.

Usually he gives up what he wants to say, play another toy or bursts into tears.

We have been seeing therapy doctor 4 times now. I feel relief in my chest that Amirul starting to get improve and he can express the basic needs like — going to toilet; “wee-wee/iyak”, want to have lunch or dinner; “rice or mee”, want to watch cartoon; “dumbo” or “rio”.

I read Sophia Speech update and — What good can we take from charmingly chandler are:

  1. speech delay is really test of patience and consistency.
  2. Learning sign is a good way to move forward.
  3. Express what she wanted can be like this: total break downs in the middle of old navy where she throws herself on the ground repeating things you can’t understand.

Speech delay is burning my heart like a flame, trying to understand what my eldest son really want. I, sometime, can’t take the heat, and try to arsorb the anger by playing angry bird or accoustic guitar, or more religious way, recite Al-Quran. Well if learning sign is a good way to move forward. I would really want to discuss with my wife that we could somehow apply basic signs that communicate with my son.

In conclusion, speech delay is a test of patience. I feel relief to know some parent have a same problem like me.

Parenting That Can Change The World

When I was a kid. I have much thoughts of how am I going to be a king and change the world. From where I stand right now, that thoughts were like plain papers that flew to the open sea before they dropped in various ways and vanished into water. I’m just an ordinary officer, who works for a government agency.
And the world isn’t going to change, at all.
Michelle has opened my mind, that through parenting, you can actually change the world. I know that I can’t see the ripple effect, in a short run. But, may be I can the different when my kids are grown up, and see how their lives much more better than I am.
Michelle wrote:

Some critics say that these kind of parenting choices will cripple a child when it comes time to make their way in the big, bad world.  And it is true that the more different you are from everyone else, the more skills and confidence you will need to successfully work and live alongside everyone else in a culture that doesn’t share your values

My choices and decisions will determine the future of my generations, echoes through my bloodline. Simple mistakes of choices and decisions would disrupt the nurturing-your-kids business. Yes, there are many options, styles, and methods can be adopted to nurturing our kids, but all of our efforts will be summed up to a simple question: will your children be a successful person?

Baby Talking Milestone [Speech Delay]

Photo: Jerrold

Here some info about average children get to speak well. Talking milestones is noted here from 1st up to 5th year. And most of the babies are well with this skill from 9 to 15 months. And speech delay and disorders happen in boys, mostly. If your children happened to have speech delay — the boy is more than 2 years  and fails to speak any word — I suggest you have to seek appointment with voice therapy. As of my eldest son, we have been seeing a doctor for a while and, believe or not, we are as parents, play a great influence on improving our children speech delay.

Speech Therapy Diary : Self Talk – Video

NOTE : Please ignore the narrator voice. :D

One of the lesson that I learnt during Amirul’s speech therapy class is self talk or story telling. I am not good narrator nor story teller. I do not have good intonation nor voice that can hold Amirul’s attention to my story. I think I should learn more how to deliver story to listener’s ear. Simple story however sound interesting and fascinate to Amirul & Widad.  Besides that, I also do not have good kid imagination and difficult to makes Amirul & Widad connect with my story. Maybe lack of humor and not creative at all.. I need to add more animation like gestures, facial expressions and excitement voice in my story.hahahha

NOTE : More tips how to be good and attractive story teller here

NOTE : I need to practice and read more to Amirul & Widad

They went Fishing together

Brother & sister went fishing together

Amirul is a stingy brother. He seldom share his toys with Widad. not only Widad, with anyone else. His belonging are not for sharing. Win Disney School Workbooks via 18 Ways to Encourage Your Children to Read

Below post had win Disney School Skills workbooks organized by Parenthots . Read our 18 ways to encourage your children to read article and read here what been published in Parenthots website. Yippie!!! Another new book collection for Amirul and Widad.

Photo: ooh_food

If average per person in Malaysia reads only 2 books in a year, you should be worried. We have low statistic for reading, low enough to make our people rethinking about living in a high performance culture.

But, if you want to do something different, here’s what can you can do: teach and nurture your children love to read.

1. Turn reading into habits

Involve your children with activities that require book or reading materials. Practice everyday, make sure it becomes part of their life.

2. Be extremely excited when there’s a book fair

Tell them news about book event, like bookfair that’s happening every year, somewhere in April. And don’t get too excited when you received SMS about J Card Day announcement, that prove no evidence on improving your children reading level.

3. Cut off Astro subscription

I will guarantee, no one will ever do this. But I would place my bet, if you cut off your Astro subscription or any other services, that turn you and your family into a lazy potato couch, then it will improve your children behavior.

One morning, I had tried not to turn on the TV for my children. Guess what? At first, they yelled at me (of course, they got pinched, what to expect? I am a strict father who doesn’t go soft with his children), then they started to play their own toys. They even reach out from cabinet — a book.

Everything changed after that. They don’t even bother to turn on the TV when they are in the living room. They weren’t attached to the buzz of the TV anymore. Freedom.  They have their toys, book, and they have each other.

I’m not a regular TV watcher for four years now.

4. Go to Zoo with animal book

The first visit to Zoo Negara with my son, I bought book about wildlife animals. So when we meet Orang Utan, Rhinosaurus, or giraffe, or even elephant, I would simply match them with animals in the book.

What came after was, the enthusiasm of constantly showing me, in the book, the animals that he had seen. In our house, he will keep the book on his side. He keep bragging about how big the elephant was, compared with inside the book.

5. Buy ipod, buy interactive book apps only

Another method to encourage them to read is to bring technology closer to them. Gadget like iPod is a good example. Xxx is the website focus on education with iPod. It gave a lot of recommendation and advice on how to fuel up your children education using efficient device like iPod and iPhone.

6. Turn off TV on prime time.

Turn off TV around 8 pm and let you and the books accompany your children. Give attention to them at least 30-60 minutes to teach them to read. Let’s forget about news and everything. The world isn’t going to end if you don’t the news.

7. Buy iPad, buy book-interactive apps

There are lot of book-interactive apps for children. Most of the awesome apps are as cheap as USD 0.99 — it’s about, rounded figures of RM 3.50.

Some say, if we embrace the technology, we have advantage over other competitors (well, consider other set of families are your competitors). This is the attacking device that should catapult the children education miles away.

8. Eat Book, Sleep Book, Drink Book

Change the rules of your family: bring book everywhere you go, from every corner of the house to every places of interest you visit. Turn the reading habit into everyday routines, like eat book, sleep book, drink book.

9. Book, book, book

Buy books, or something that indirectly contribute into reading a book. For a start, try buy books just for collection. Then buy book rack, then another large book rack. Then buy not only the book rack, buy something that can bring more books into the house. Then you realize your house is surrounded by books. From that you can grow interest of reading books among your children — with the help of book-friendly environment.

10. Birthday gift is a book

I can imagine how large the curve of my children’ frown would be if I buy them only books for their birthdays. Ok, every year, I will buy two special gifts: one is the book for compulsory gift, and another one is the not-a-book gift.

The reason I buy a book for their birthday every year because I want them to love books, and I want them to have books on their special day.

11. Buy them cheap book, at least one, when buy groceries

When they follow you to a market like Tesco or Carrefour, you should spend one book for them. Then ask them to read in front of you. Don’t concern too much about the groceries, there’s an important habit you need to seed inside your children mind.

12. Book is the new toy

Whenever you buy a new toy, you should prefer books over remote control car or Play-Doh . I know that your kids’ life will be like mine: books are the only things that my parent considered. If a toy can’t be a tool for building my cleverness, then my father would not buy it. Ever.

13. You, yourself, should read everyday to build positive subconscious inside of you

If the parent don’t even have an atom of interest of reading, then don’t blame your children who hate reading so much, and prefer playing Angry Bird to fill the time.

Remember the phrase “bapak borek anak rintik”. My opinion is that, you should increase your reading frequency that can build the habit from inside .

And your children will follow.

14. Read with/to your children

This point is very common. I have seen in many websites that your can set up routine, where you read to and with your children, 30 minute before you going to sleep. Nevertheless, this is one of the important steps to encourage the reading habit.

15. Write A Book

Tired of stories that doesn’t follow your own interest. My suggestion is to draw and write your own story, make your own children heroes, and have fun with them while you guy making progress to complete the book.

16. Ask them to read signboard or billboard

While travelling the long and winding road, ask your children every signboard or billboard. Reward them. Reward them again, if they write journal about what they have observed during the trip.

17. Put an inception that reading is like just like breathing.

Always inject with the ideas that only people who loves reading can be successful. Say to them, reading books is just as important as breathing the air. Reading can light up our future, a path to glorious victory.

18. Go to library, instead of Sunway Pyramid.

Why not make a regular visit to library, rather than go to shopping mall. Yes, there are lot of book store that offers reading experience such as MPH, Kinokuniya, dan Popular. Our national library offers an expansion of books to read for hours. Plus, the people behavior around you makes you feel you need to improve your reading routine.

Conclusion

It is our efforts to build our next generation who appreciate reading and know how important it is to build a knowledgeable society. May be my suggestions above will encourage our children to read.

Let’s hope that our government campaign be materialized with our efforts.
