Small GPS to track your children

If you worried about child abduction, there’s a a technology called Amber Alert GPS that can track your children and give prompt alert whenever you notice that your children don’t show up when the school time is over and you’ve been waiting for more than one hour.

The tracking device is tiny enough to conceal in your kids’ bag or in the pocket. But it will burn your pocket as much as 218.99 dollar. That’s about RM 648.76 . I have a son and a daughter. So I have to save more than RM 1297.52 if I count with the shipping fee.

But people said you can get money back but you can’t never get back your precious ones once they lost. So, to me, money is not a problem.

I heard people said that — based on the statistics — crime has plunged when compared to last year, but the fear of crime has never got any lower from my view. Because I always sense danger when I left my children playing outside of our house unattended. The world has changed. My children will never get a childhood memory as monumental as mine, where I could — endlessly — play outside as far as 5km away from my house, from the sunrise to sunset.

Even with a tracking device like this that might relieve you in some ways, I still like to monitor them when they are playing outside. I only feel secured when they are lingering in my eyes.

It’s a lot money. I know. It’s like a year worth of saving. But security of our children must not be compromised. I don’t want to lose my children, and if I lost them, I lost the will to live.

Should I be worried about the iPad addiction?

Widad laid on her back and relax like she got insurmountable amount of money from somewhere, the bottle glued in her mouth while watching an iPad in one beautiful evening — it’s a mesmerizing moment and I admired the coolness of this shot above.  But the news I’ve read startled me a little.  Because my youngest one can’t hold off the iPad, even when she’s taking a poop. Should I be worried?

Young technology addicts experienced the same withdrawal symptoms as alcoholics or heroin addicts, when the devices were taken away.

Is it really that bad? I mean, heroin addicts? Maybe the doctor was a little bit exaggerated or may be he’s on weed he couldn’t think straight.

Christopher Peruzzi says that this situation cycles from the sixties, back when we — human — had the new technology then. We called it TV. He said, “Really? When you overstimulate someone with a highly addictive activity it can be habit forming? I wonder if they thought the same thing during the sixties and beyond when they left kids in front of televisions as an electronic babysitter. Sure, now they care.”

But I know and it’s a principle of life: Letting yourself doing a little too much over something might harm you. Too much watching TV, too much exercising, or too much in everything, and you might vomit rainbow.

Internet Paling Laju Di Dunia Berada Di Jepun

(RM150/5Mbps) Sungguh rip-off. Sayang, jom packing, kita pindah Jepun!

Tangan Bionic Yang Mengubah Dunia Seorang Bapa

    1. Patent-pending vari-grip mode: pengguna boleh mengubah variasi pergerakan tangan digit demi digit kekuatan cengkaman.
    2. Pilihan isyarat tangan yang meluas membolehkan pengguna mencipta pergerakan baru.

Tech Link of The Week #12

Here are a few links that caught my attention his week:

1. Galaxy S III, iPhone Users Not So Different After All by AllThingsD

One thing people aren’t doing much of on either device is making phone calls. Both Galaxy and iPhone owners use their phones more to access the Web and send text messages than they do for phone calls. Phone use outpaced email, but only slightly. That said, devotees of Apple or Samsung are likely to argue their device does those same tasks oh-so-much-better.And, of course, when one looks a little deeper, there are demographic and other differences.

 2. Charge Your Phone Faster by Switching to Airplane Mode Before Plugging In by Lifehacker

Putting your phone into airplane mode turns off all of the wireless radios inside, so while you won’t be able to receive calls, use data, or use GPS, you also won’t be fighting background processes that use those radios for power while your phone is plugged in. The end result is your phone will charge a little faster, and you’ll walk away with a bit more power in your battery than you would otherwise.

And kids these days! Deloitte says that a fifth of “trailing millennials” — 14-to-23-year-olds — say they’re watching TV shows on their tablets. That’s up from just 2 percent a year ago. But tablets still aren’t ubiqitous among that set — they’re more likely to watch their shows via smartphones, game consoles, computers or plain old TV sets.

5. Why I Hacked Donkey Kong for My Daughter via Wired.com

Finally, one day after work, she asked to play Donkey Kong, only this time she raised a pretty innocent and simple question: “How can I play as the girl? I want to save Mario!” It made sense. We had just played Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES a few days before, and she became obsessed with playing as Princess Toadstool. So to go back to Donkey Kong, I can see how natural it seemed to ask the question

The Evernote Service Has Been Compromised

EVernote

I woke early about 4.30 a.m, being forced by my son, whining to have a bottle of milk with his eyes shut. Suddenly, out of still-sleeping brain, I had an awesome quote that I remembered and I would like to note in.

Opened my Evernote, heavy pressing on keyboard, sync!!

Sync failed. I was startled. The sync failure transmitted an alarm to my brains.

I clicked again. Failed. I was shaking and I thought someone, who have a hacking skill, change my password. I made an impulsive move to log in via evernote.com website and it brought me immediately to change password page.

I change the password and re-login. Success.

I tried to sync again via Evernote app. Success. Sleep.

At 10.00 am, I opened Gmail and read an email from Evernote team:

Dear Evernote user,

Evernote’s Operations & Security team has discovered and blocked suspicious activity on the Evernote network that appears to have been a coordinated attempt to access secure areas of the Evernote Service.

No. My lovely Evernote has been compromised. Ah, I always treated you like my girlfriend I dreamed about. Why someone tried to rob you. Someone wanted to open your brain and took informations about us and all our secrets. Thank god your preventive system were able to wall this intrusion.

In our security investigation, we have found no evidence that any of the content you store in Evernote was accessed, changed or lost. We also have no evidence that any payment information for Evernote Premium or Evernote Business customers was accessed.

The investigation has shown, however, that the individual(s) responsible were able to gain access to Evernote user information, which includes usernames, email addresses associated with Evernote accounts, and encrypted passwords. Even though this information was accessed, the passwords stored by Evernote are protected by one-way encryption. (In technical terms, they are hashed and salted.)

Give a two big thumbs up to security team. If you are an alien, give them ten. I don’t about this, but lately a lot of companies that holds our sensitive information is being compromised. But as an average people, these incidents don’t really gives us real deal individually. As far as I’m concern, I had never heard someone, in my social circle, had been ruined by stolen data thing. I hope it never will.

Lastly, the team advice us to do something important, you have to do it to websites you regularly sign in.

There are also several important steps that you can take to ensure that your data on any site, including Evernote, is secure:
Avoid using simple passwords based on dictionary words
Never use the same password on multiple sites or services
Never click on ‘reset password’ requests in emails – instead go directly to the service

New Ideas For Telecommunications

telecommunication

This is my entry for a chance to winning an iPad Mini contest. Hope you guys can put your opinion on the comments below:

Telecommunication defined as the transmission of information by means of electromagnetic signals: over copper wires, coaxial cable, fiber-optic strands, or the airwaves.

In perspective of Malaysia, I classify three areas of telecommunication; content provider, mobile technology, broadband provider.

New ideas for Telecommunications:
  1. A lot of freebies - After following obsessively technology business model like Dropbox, iCloud, Evernote and even Facebook, they give to their customers a glimpse of their services. They give experience to customer. The reason behind this because they can cultivate and familiarize with the technology, eventually they’re willing to pay the service in a long run.
  2. Refurbished Items - A lot of customers pursue a new and advanced technology especially in mobile industry. But, there’s an untapped, potential market in refurbished items.
  3. Target Niche Market – We can offer specific packages for photographers, tourists, students, music and movie lovers. Different people need different telecommunications such as one day package for tourists, excessive rebate of data for photographers, and 10 classic P-Ramlee movies on mobility.
  4. Bundled packages – If Telcos and ISPs can collaborate to blacklist customers who have overdue bills, there are no reasons to cross-collaborate in offering bundled package for various consumers’ need.
  5. Proper Content Management – Most of consumers are technology illiterate. They want movies, music, dramas, tele-movies, TV shows, and local live events at the touch of their fingertips. Combine with illogically low price, they create impulse buying, therefore customers purchases are not on money-wise, but on product-wise.

In conclusion, making great products is more important than winning business. Steve Jobs once said, “People don’t know what they want until you show it to them. That’s why I never rely on market research. Our task is to read things that are not yet on the page”.

Oh God, Please, God. Help me win iPad Mini. I’m so ashamed of having the ugly iPad original

Playstation 4 announcement may increase sales of PS3 in Malaysia

PS4

Sony announced Playstation 4 today. As a tech enthusiast plus young dad like me, this is a notable event in 2013. PS4 will improve gameplay experience. It took no different when I migrated from PS2 to PS3, but this may take some time for users to adjust with the new features.

As introduced by lead system architect Mark Cerny, the PS4 is based on a “supercharged PC architecture,” with an X86 processor, enhanced PC-style GPU, and 8GB of GDDR5 unified high-speed memory. The controller is called, unsurprisingly, the DualShock 4, and features the Vita-style touchpad we’d heard about, and a light bar on the back to identify players. Each PS4 will contain a 3D camera to track the various controllers using the bar. The PS4 contains 8 CPU cores, providing almost 2 teraflops of computational performance. The power allows for 30,000 polygons to be rendered in real time (by way of comparison, Heavy Rain on the PS3 utilized 15,000)

-the verge-

Here are some of the drawbacks:

  • It won’t play ps3 games.
  • You must have a consistent internet connection. No Internet. No Game.
  • Other consoles like Wii U and Xbox will have more advanced feature than PS4.

Gaming Console Atmosphere in Malaysia.
The announcement may change the gaming world in Malaysia. Most of us may not be grabbing PS4 because it will be much expensive for us, (Blame our income per capita, we don’t have a privillege to play the latest console like developed country), but I’m guessing the sale of PS3 will increase in number as its price will be significantly going down.

I think I’ll pass this. OUYA is already bought me.

[Photo above is just a mock device of PS4]

How I Choose A Smartphone

One day, my wife found hard to make decision between choosing item A and item B, then her friend suggested to try Grid Analysis and she said

“What? Do we really need that deep fried analysis to be adopted to our life? Formality is so boring!”

“Wait, there’s something good in it. Let’s try!” I reply in excitement.

So I tried.

I’ve read thoroughly the link, do the study, take 1 minute per word reading to improve my understanding towards the method.

What is Grid Analysis actually mean? When you have more than two choices that you can basically compare the criteria or the feature of the product itself.

The basic comparison. Using this tool, you can compare the two or more item that are in the same line of product.

I name three product can be compared, shoulder to shoulder:

  1. Cars: SUV, Sedan, 4×4 wheel
  2. Personal Computer: Desktop PC, Laptop, or Tablet.
  3. Smartphone: Brand comparison that available in the market.

The choice. For this post, I was searching for perfect smartphone, that I drive myself crazy with mumbling and gibberish swears for a long time and I came up with three choices:

  1. iPhone 4s [Review: link to engadget]
  2. Samsung Galaxy S2 [Review: link to engadget]
  3. Motorola Atrix / Atrix 2 [Review: link to engadget]

All reviews I had read was on Engadget. Hope you can broaden your knowledge about smartphones on multiple sources.

Before I continue with heavy explanation and analysis (this is heavy for me), I am the person who likes:

  1. Reading
  2. Writing
  3. Playing Games
  4. Watching Movies

REMINDER: Before you start doing analysis — well — analyze yourself first. See what you are and how a smartphone can fit with your personality.

Steps

Forgive me as I ripped off the text exactly from the article (I let the laziness came in):

1. List all the options as the row labels on the table, and list the factors that you need to consider as the column headings.

2. Next, work your way down the column of your table, scoring each option for each of the factors in your decision. Score each option from 0 (poor) to 5 (very good). Note that you do not have to have different score for each option – if none of them are good for a particular factor in your decision, then all option should score 0.

3. The next step is to work out the relative importance of the factors in your decision. Show these as numbers from, say, 0 to 5, where 0 means that the factor is absolutely unimportant in the final decision, and 5 means that it is very important. (it’s perfectly acceptable to have factors with the same importance)

4. Now multiply each of our scores from step 2 by the values for relative importance of the factor that you calculated in step 3. This will give you weighted score for each option/factor combination.

5. Finally, add up these weighted score for each of your options. The option that scores the highest winner.

My analysis. Below are the criteria that I’m looking for to buy a smartphone:

Data and Wifi Connections.

Smartphone is synonymous with constant internet connection. Without it would benothing. Most of people put it as number one priority. Speed and sustainability are everything especially for businessmen, email dependent, facebook and twitter junkies, state-of-always-connected to the internet people.

But not for me.

I’m more to reading stuff: off line articles and novels, writing on the go, watching videos, and playing games. So I concluded that I don’t need such constant internet connection. It dries up my productive anyway.

Performance & Productivity

Smartphone is also synonymous with performance. Smartphone with lack of performance is no smartphone at all.

While I’m looking for the performance at best, I consider the smartphone that can brings, at least, modest productivity.

I’m also not looking for a very high performance that can play Ninja Gaiden or latest Modern Warfare on my palm.

Enough that I can release my anger playing with a simple survival game. What I’m looking for is the one that can deliver easy reading and writing.

Usability, UI friendly,and Design.

User interface must be cool, the gadget must be friendly user, and I guess, you must be wanted to show off of your smartphone to your friend — how much sexy she can hold, for example. I dont want to bleed my eyes everytime I glimpse at own smartphone. Even a milisecond.

So I should stay away from those bulky, horrible smartphones – like Sony Ericsson.

Apps Ecosystem.

There are only two apps ecosystems available in the market.

Apple and Android.

And Symbian. And Window Phone7. And Blackberry OS. And PalmOS .And Meego. And Bada. And what?

That’s more than two. But Apple and Android are the ones that seem available to me. The rest are not because their ecosystems are not strong enough to make my heart skipped a beat.

Settings and Tweaks

This feature is provided by OS developer to give you control on your control, in term of setting and tweaking your phone, to satisfy with your personal taste.

This is one of the vital factors to have in a smartphone to be in my pocket.

Tell me, who don’t want to your own smartphone to follow your own personal taste? It’s like creating your own little world inside that small rectangle box.

Battery, Hardware, and all.

Hear me this: I want to play games all day long, I want to watch movies in marathon mode, and I want to free writing until my hands burn out. And I want to do it on my smartphone. The battery and the hardware should hold up to my needs

Affordability

Of course. Since I have two children that always maintain my upkeep high, I have to looking for cheapest one yet can still deliver performance.

Extra Features

If a smartphones can bring extra feature that will be good. But not essential as the points above.

Again. Find your interest first, then find your smartphone. I bet most of the reader will be choosing iPhone 4s

More Analysis

Grid analysis can be used on day-to-day operation in being-a-father job. The decisions that I can think right now are:

  1. Choosing the right nursery.
  2. Choosing the right, affordable car for your family yet can deliver arousing jealousy among your neighbors, friends, and family.
  3. Choosing the right internet service provider that benefits to all your family members as well as your needs.

Conclusion. Base on my result, it was difficult to do and I felt it’s a little bit overrated from doing that analysis. But I realized, it is the right tool for me to make a decision and I feel less r

At least, I was using a tool before making a decision.

So daddy and mommy, what is your solution when having difficulties choosing item A and item B in your daily life?

Planning What To Do When You Are Online

Photo: Federico Morando

In the era of internet age and the beauty of informations, I could sit in front my laptop all day until midnight, just doing blank surfing that contributes nothing to productivity. I see myself turned into information junkie that I can swallow any informations — most of them are unnecessary — clouded on the internet.

The information on the internet is so beauty, I could lost touch with reality. If my mind isn’t sanity enough, I would let myself careless about being a good father, and lover; and sit down in front of PC, and ignore all my responsibilities for the day, because I need to quench my thirst of information addiction.

Celestine Chua Wrote:
Without setting this intention clear, you can be easily distracted by the barrage of things online once you log on. Write a list of things you want to do that can only be done online. For example, say you’re writing a report and you need to research on the topic. You also want to check your mail for updates from clients. Then, follow this list and strike each item off once it’s completed. If you come across something online that’s not in your list, that’s a distraction and you should ignore it.
Yes, I agree with that. When doing things on the internet,we needs to have goals, like financial goals for 2011. Planning when you are online or else, by the end of the day, I realized that I was not doing anything good to myself or to my family. I lost my focus and concerned about things weren’t important. If you a need help, try read this book: Focus. And it’s free.
After you read, you will feel a lot better and you can control yourself when you need to focus.

iPad for Everyone

When iPad launched in US, Mr Hubby already started eyeing  the iPad. The bombastic reviews about iPad made Mr Hubby dreamt about it day and night. Keep watching the good price at eBay, comparing iPad with other gadgets until is was launch in Malaysia. After reading SecondTime Parenthood, I immediately told Mr Hubby and without wait any minutes, he told me ‘ I’m going to MidValley during lunch time to get my iPad. Get your iPad, since when you booked the thing and somemore without discussion with me.. huhuh’

So now, everybody was fighting for iPad.. Daddy wants to check his email, eBay business, update his novel, while mummy need to update blog, facebooking and browse for recipe for the day (perlu ker guna ipad tuk tgk resepi, uhuk)  etc. Not forgetting Amirul & Widad, both of them also crazy for iPad. To solve the problem, we set the time for each of us to use the iPad. Tell me that we are crazy when tho, we already have the lappy for each of us. uhuhuh

Alhamdulillah, I think the iPad is worth for money. So many applications suitable for Mummy Daddy Amirul & Widad. Last time, Mr Hubby sharing about apps for kids and toddler. I will ask him to share apps suitable for me. Lets wait for his update.

Maxis Broadband Myths: 13 Reasons Not To Subcribe

If I watch commercial ads or look at the banner, I would personally describe Maxis Broadband as,
  • the new innovative way to surfing internet.
  • open the new world of wireless connection.
  • exciting moment with multimedia enriched.
  • the world is at fingertips.
  • 3.6Mbps: Watch video online without hiccups and buffers.
Get faster Internet connection with Maxis Wired Broadband and enjoy Internet speeds of up to 1.0M through Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology. It’s goodbye to slow downloads and endless waiting!

But it is actually a full of swindling, twisting, and turning. Maxis Broadband is not like what you think.
Here’s 13 reasons why you should not subscribe to Maxis Broadband.

Unlimited? It’s really misleading advertisement.

Each customer’s total usage per month shall NOT exceed 3GB of data volume transmitted (total upload and download usage). This is to ensure that no individual hogs the bandwidth at all times. 5.3.2 If a customer wishes to use more than the volume permitted, a written request should be made to Maxis. 5.3.3 Maxis reserves the right to reject the said application or charge for any additional data volume transmitted from what is already allocated.

  • It is automatically turn to 256kbps if your bandwith reach 3GB which is much more worst than basic package.
  • Maxis sales representative didn’t show transparency value. They tell you lies, unclear, and incomplete information.
  • Most online game application cannot run properly or can’t run at all. Only show pending processes.
  • You cannot Torrent and P2P. Blockage on 99% ports and sharing is becoming impossible.
  • VPN Service to connect to your workplace is unusable.
  • You cannot do Skype and other VOIP application which means you cannot do video conferencing,
  • Extremely slow browsing experience during night time.
  • Frequent internet disconnection during browsing. It gets worse when it’s raining.
4.8 Maxis may, at its sole discretion, automatically disconnect the customer’s internet session after a period of inactivity, which may vary from 20 minutes to 30 minutes. This automatic disconnection is to allow maximum network performance.

If you want to say something to say about Maxis Broadband, please do not hesitate to put it on comment.

Tech link: How my wife ruined GTA IV

Something that interest on How my wife ruined GTA IV.

She ran over to a huge semi truck and jacked it. I thought to myself “This should be fun, there is no way she is going to be able to drive that around and not get in trouble.” I couldn’t have been more wrong. As the semi began to lumber out of its parking spot my wife exclaimed, “Oooh, you know what will be fun, driving around and obeying all of the traffic rules.” Yeah, because THAT’S what makes GTA IV a great game, obeying all the rules! What the holy hell is wrong here!?!?

And here are tech link for today.

A wonder of HTC Touch Diamond

This might be the great competitor to iPhone and I could feel the next 3G iPhone is not important anymore.

HTC Diamond features media enriched experience and amazing buttons and icons animation that will jump up the gadget lovers from their seat. After watching several video of the phone review (1 ) (2 ), I could say that HTC Diamond will make an excellent sale. I think this is better than iPhone. See more the detail of specifications.

I found out that the navigational pad on the device is actually touch sensitive so it adds functionality to the device. For example, when you are taking a photo with the 3.2 megapixel camera (I can’t wait to see how this performs) placing your finger on the navigational pad auto-focuses the camera to help take clear shots. You can also use this touch sensitive navigational pad for scrolling in web pages and more.

I wonder when will this innovation be introduced in Malaysia?

If Microsoft bought Yahoo! What will happen to Mail?

Paul Glazowski came up the idea of what will happen if Microsoft and Yahoo! if they Microsoft winning the buyout, my opinion is that Microsoft will maintain the Yahoo! Mail and may be fully use this facility instead of Hotmail because people are likely to use Yahoo! Mail more than Hotmail. Yahoo! Mail is a superior facility that serves millions around the world, Microsoft might not want to get rid off so easy. Here I pick a quote from the article.
