Widad is 3 today!!!

I seldom talk about Widad. My daughter. The one who gives me daily headache, the one who put a big grin on my face, the one who do things beyond my thinking, the one who is looking for me at night to sleep with, the one who has super power although time show 12 midnight. She is Widad Safiyyah. No matter what she does, I love her so much. A day without her, I feel the world is so silent and quiet.

fe19f26a736a11e2a1e322000a9e0853_7If you see this spiderwoman in motion car, what do you expect this mother to do?? This is the daily madness that i need to go through with her

copilotWhat am I supposed to do when I saw this face. Melting .
One day, I received a report from her teacher :
Teacher :  Pn, Widad is biting her friend – showing the two teeth marked.
Me : Adik, why do you bites your friend
Widad : Gigi adik tajam (My teeth is sharp)
Me : Should I scold her or laugh there and then.

Do you know she is shouting like someone is beating her up when the batter is finished. Not to mention the aftermath she did on the floor. Just forget it. She is exploring and in the learning process

Happy 3 Year Old Widad

Daughter found fossil, scientist to decide to name it after her

BBC – Daisy Morris from the Isle of Wight stumbled upon the remains on Atherfield beach four years ago. A scientific paper stated the newly discovered species of pterosaur would be called Vectidraco daisymorrisae. Fossil expert Martin Simpson said this was an example of how “major discoveries can be made by amateurs”. Daisy’s mum Sian Morris said her daughter had started fossil hunting aged three and came across the blackened “bones sticking out of the sand” in 2009, when she was four years old

An extinct dinosaur named after a daughter!! If this was Widad, I would grant a small castle for my little girl, complete with fossil-digging gadgets. Since my daughter’s talent was being recognized, I made it clear to rail my daughter’s career at early age — a path to become paleontologist  But as far as I’m concern, in this country, there’s no fossil to be found. In fact, I have sense that my daughter has no interest in collecting fossil. She has no interest in collecting anything.

If she ought to collect something, she wants it for one reason — just like other toys that I have bought for her: to bend and break.

and if people spend too much time with one technology, and less time interacting with people like parents at the dinner table, that could hinder the development of certain communications skills.

Use This Tech to Get Your Kids Off the Couch

Technology is ingrained in our kids’ lives but instead of blaming it for rising levels of obesity, perhaps we can use their reliance on tech to their health advantage and leverage it as a motivating tool to get them more active.

The Terrible Truth About Toddlers and Touchscreens

The American Academy of Pediatrics is unambiguous about time spent with screens . It says any at all is bad for children under a certain age. “Television and other entertainment media should be avoided for infants and children under age 2. A child’s brain develops rapidly during these first years, and young children learn best by interacting with people, not screens.”

There has been a string of high-profile cases where children have racked up thousands of dollars in credit card charges through in-app purchases. In these cases and others like them, the iOS devices used by the children have not been properly locked down by the parents.

Migration: A Story of Generations Game Review

The complexity of the game is all based on how good your opponents are and how well the individual player selected their Explorers. Since the game is designed to squeeze players out, the player who picked the best Explorers doesn’t necessarily win. The player who uses their Explorer tokens the smartest, does. But since what the player is going up against is random and dependent on their opponents, the only thing a player can do is intelligently react and be as aggressive as possible, while not migrating themselves into a corner.

Smartphone, tablet apps pose risk to children

Arnason is also warning parents about the dangers of apps. She said too often apps allow children to be contacted by strangers through the internet and often without the parent’s knowledge.

Scamworld: A documentary from TheVerge

this video is a MAJOR EYE OPENER. after this year its going to get harder and harder for the miseducated, misguided and the weak minded. With a flood of people coming in seeking refuge from unemployment and the dwindling economy, the scams are going to increase and the con artist are going to have more unsuspecting people to take advantage of. Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior?

Chinese Mother Banner

This week question on Quora is:

Is Amy Chua right when she explains “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” in an op/ed in the Wall Street Journal?

Chinese mothers are superior. I respect them for what they sacrifice for their children. Their method, unfortunately, makes other people, especially in Western cultures, feel uncomfortable, offended. Strict parenting such as spanking is one is the best method in Asian cultures. I grew up in strict parenting, and I appreciate my mom for that. I become a better man.

I don’t know if you guys notice but, I have observed a mother of three children who was so strict and fierce, the kids were so behaved, they did show manners to people around them. However, I notice answer regarding suicide statistics among Asian teens

I see Asian teens in my clinic; many are academically quite successful, but are also the ones I worry most about re: suicide. The depression red flags are different for many Asian teens, who may be getting good grades, are still engaged in extra-curricular activities, while profoundly struggling with self-identity, self-esteem, and rigidity in thought about potential outcomes (“either I have to be a Harvard lawyer, or I’ll be so ashamed that the only outlook is death”). Also very problematic is the stigma against outsiders (non-family) giving help – many parents do not want their children to see a professional, wanting to keep all issues within the family.

Suzan Song, global child/adolescent psychiatrist

My mom had stopped being so fearsome when I went to secondary school. From the day 1 of being Form 1 boy at boarding school, my mom had been approaching me by giving thoughtful advice. Strict parenting suppose to stop when our children decide things on their own. Feel pressure if they’re being treated as a small child.

Even with spanking, swinging rotan, and spanking, my affection for my mother is inflating as I get older:

In recent years, when I compare notes with my Chinese American friends and peers, one thing I consistently hear was the lack of love from their parents, or that the love was conditional on success. I never had that. My parents loved me no matter what and they made that clear, not just in words, but in actions. Despite every time I got scolded (man, the English word for scold, which is the correct translation, does not begin to really capture the hurricane of verbal abuse a Chinese woman is capable of), it would hurt and build resentment, but I could never look back and not see it coming from love and hopeful expectation for my future. Everything that they did, every sacrifice that they made, was to give me a better future than the past that they came from.

Daniel Shi, Chinese

Bottom Line.

Every parenting method has its pros and cons. All that I think of is to weight our decisions upon nurturing our children in the most awesome way, or we can mix and cook all of the method in a lab and produce the hybrid one.

Helicopter Parent

image

Helicopter parent??

Are you one of them?? I wish that I am not one in the statistic.

It is true that we want the best in our children. We put our best effort to make sure they excel in everything they do.

However, do we need to be that extend to use our power or influence to put our children among the best.

They’re pros and cons. But I believe, after at the age of 13, we need to let our children to make their own decisions.

As a parent, we give them guidance and act as an advisory  Do not make decision on behalf of him, let them feel the responsibilities and feel the risk. Let them feel the trust we put in them. Let them take the responsibilities given and perform it well.

I always remind to myself do not cross the limit. What are my expectation maybe not the same expectation of our children. Every child is unique and talented. As parent, our encouragement and support should always with them.

So what’s your opinion?

My First Cook in Five Years

You will not believe this. I’m good at cooking.

Day One
After reading, rereading, reading again and again (how to cook for first timer), I’ve nailed it. I actually can cook.

I was jumping two feet off the ground I forgot to take a photos of it.

Except the chicken was overcook. And my served food was over-season with Thyme. Leaving, excruciatingly herb taste on my kids’ lips, my wife’s lips, and my own lips. And garbage-eating cat’s lips.

Day Two
Hahah.. Malaysian food. This is easy. Too easy for me. Ayam Masak Kicap is too much easy for me.

841250_10151389325213991_1917322573_o
But at the last step, I retarded myself, losing my cooking skills, and tossing Kicap Masin, instead of Kicap Manis.

“Oh no, why I mistook the salty soy sauce over the sweet one?”

And my goooddddd!!! The the taste is skyfalling awesome of salty chicken, you could lost one leg in three heartbeats.

But I ate it anyway. It was horrible. I have to. I was responsible to finish it.

Like everyone else, I was living in denial by saying my cook is good. I was like a 2nd choice footballer in Harimau Malaya team, burning the reserve seat for too long and waiting for the primary chef to have an eyebag of tiredness and then have lazy days.

Just like a second rate player, I excited to show the world what kind of super chief I can be.

To tell you the truth. Im deeply know the concept of cooking. The food is raw. You cook. You eat. I thought by knowing thé concept, you know the cooking. Well, I guess I’m wrong.

Yes honey, Your secret is safe with me. I won’t tell anyone about your overcooked pizza was As hard as gold plated flying saucer you can smack Aaron Aziz off the ground.

Are you really can cook like Jamie Oliver?
I’m good in cooking!!!. I only lost it to my wife. Yes, granted that she is the leading chef in our house. At least im not in last place. My son and daughter both took the third and the last place. Hahah..

Happy 5th Birthday Amirul

amirulMummy, Daddy & Adik love you abang

Alhamdulillah, today Amirul turn 5 years old. Recall back the moment when  he came out from my womb, the feeling when the nurse putting him on my chest, breastfed him and that is the day I become a mother. The feeling is totally can not be described with words. I’m so thankful to Allah swt for this precious gift. Semoga Amirul membesar menjadi anak yang soleh dan sentiasa hormat pada mami and dadi

He talks a lot nowadays. Requesting so many answers which sometimes, Mummy headache to give an answer. Such of his queries :

Amirul End Year Performance

Alhamdulillah Amirul can write his own name including mami, dadi and widad. To me and Mr Hubby it’s a huge improvement and we very proud of him.

I knew it’s nothing compare to other kids and he is on track which is what in the book said as what 4 years old milestones should be. I am typical mom who is very proud of their kid achievement. Our kid always the best.

Talking about Amirul year end performance, there are room for improvement and mami knew that she needs to work hard on homeschooling. Do not depend too much at school when parent been proven is the best teacher.

imageCollage

Nevertheless,i’m thinking to enroll amirul into islamic montessari near to our house. There are pros and cons about transferring kids to new school. So what say you mami out there. Any opinion to share.

There are few reasons why I’m looking new school and daycare to them:
(1) The current school have frequently cuti peristiwa and very short notice was given to us. While I’m spending wisely on our annual leave, the school always making us to have emergency leave.
(2) Whenever there is school trip,the day care automatically close. Again we need to take emergency leave
(3) The safety of the place is doubtful. amirul and widad both injured twice
(4) The owner of the school force the kids to consume Herbalife with extra pay into the monthly fee
(5) The current school no activities for afternoon. I’m looking for Islamic programs for afternoon session.

When time is very limited and precious

Recently i hardly update this blog. The time that i have is very limited. Juggling between works at office and at home is very challenging nowadays. Outstations and stayback, house chaos and homeschooling causing Supermom lay down flat on the comfortable bed by 9pm. Krohhh.krohhhh.krohh

Thanks to Allah for having Mr Hubby who always understand me and never complaint about tired or i hate doing this. Being a parent has a wide job scope as he claims. Dont’t be selfish and demand for perfect wife who capable to do everything. They are not machine. They also need rest and relax. Syukur Alhamdulillah.

For the kids, Mr Hubby always tell me: Don’t worry too much when your time spending with them is very limited. Soonner or later they will understand yang dadi and mami keluar mencari rezeki untuk sesuap nasi

Nothing else that i want beside understanding Mr Hubby and happy kids when time is very constraint and precious.

How to become highly super patient mom.

Packing List for Travelling with Kids – Minimal and Optimal

During our 4D 3N Singapore Trip last year. One big expendable luggage bag, one bagpack and 1 handbag

Hari Raya is just around the corner. I love packing clothes and stuffs for travelling but, light packing for 4 of us is almost impossible. Essential items like milk, milk’s bottle, diapers, clothes,munchies [biscuits, bread, vitagen etc] almost cater for 1 bag, not mentioning our essential as well

Although it local travelling or just going back to hometown, i just hate if i miss our kids essential items and to me, everything is very important and a must have in the luggage bag. However, here a few tips that i just found out how to minimize and optimize your items for travelling especially with kids and long hours driving . This is for 1 weeks packing list for drive travelling with kids

[1] Hand Carry/ Portable/Light bag for emergency
Provide a small bag to put all necessities during emergencies, for example,
* 2 spare clothes if your child is vomiting
* Diaper at least  4pcs,
* Formula milk in the milk dispenser  & milk bottle,
* Hot and cold water,
* Munchies [biscuits, bread, vitagen, chocolate]
* Travel pack toiletries
* Towels & handkerchief
* Medicine, Minyak angin cap kapak
* Wet cloth wipes
* Gadget/ Toys
* Plastic Bag – in case your kids want to puke, just grab one from you bag. Also may use it as wetbag to put soil diapers

[2] Luggage Bag Packing List
Toiletries & Personal Care [packed together, in a ziplock bag]
* Tooth paste, toothbrushes,
* Nail clippers,
* Children’s medicine/ Your medical card
* Birth control, vitamins,
* Insect repellant[mopiko]
* Deodorant
* Moisturizer Cream / Lotion

Technology Stuff to Bring / Toys
This is very important as to entertain the kids and to ensure they full occupied during the long hours trip. Kids happy, parent less worries and headache

Clothes
Packing clothes is most challenging part when you traveling with kids. Some expert recommends “traveling light “and that’s great advice. However, I prefer to bring along enough clothes that we never need to waste time to do shopping for new clothes. But the choice is yours!

Clothes for Kids
*
Plenty of shirt
* Fews jeans / denim
* Sleepwear
* Underwear
* Socks

Clothes for Grownups
*
3 shirt and rotate.
* 2 jeans / denim – wrinkles free
* 2 Sleepwear
* Sweater & Sock

Tips :
[1] Bags will hold more if the clothes are rolled rather than folded . Rolled your clothes
[2] Avoid white/ clear color shirt, easy to get dirty and need of changing
[3] Just soak your shirt after use and hang it. In the next morning you may wear it again

Spanking?? Its a method of Disciplining Children

image

Spanking you children? In educating and disciplining the children, I prefer my partner to determine which is the best for our children. Whether  to be authoritative parent, authoritarian parent, or permissive parent.  Above three parenting styles, my partner is believed that the authoritarian parenting is more effective in disciplining the children. Authoritarian parenting, also called strict parenting

So, one way to discipline our children is spanking. However, we do not blindly spanking our children. This is how we spanking our children :

[1] Spank in private
We spank them at home. However, if we are not at home, we will pinch them unnoticed by those around. Out of sudden, they only hear the kids were crying. Little threaten like, ” You want to get scold by mummy or not ?” also work sometimes

[2] Never harm the child
We would pinch on their thigh or spank on their calf using open hand

[3] Do not hit the child with implements or objects -
We have cane at home. Hang on together with the car’s key. It the most seen place at home. This cane be meant for their attention, as a warning sign and establish our authority

[4] Give them one warning
First is warning, if the warning is ignored, a pinch will descend on their thighs

Although some parents disagree with authoritarian parenting, but we believe authoritarian parenting have resulted more positive child outcomes , like more focused and have good achievement

Children Are Not Small-Sized Adult

Photo by [The US Army]

Mother-in-law always remind me, Amirul & Widad should be treat like a child not an adult.

Children is an individual age between day 1 to 12 years old, before they enter adolescence age. At this range of age, their biological, psychological and emotional growth rapidly. Like a sponge absorbing the water, that is children, they imitate what we say, do, act, sometimes, even what we eat and wear. They pretend to be like us. Unlike an adult, who can think rationally, a child need their parent’s guidance, advises, instructions, supervision before they enter adulthood

Children at this phase still learning where most of us parents guiding them. Even the simple thing like how to eat & drink, how to socialize & manners with adults, how to be brave and independent. In short,everything should be shown how. you remember the magpie bird ads?

“Ni burung apa, ni murung murai”

Children need repetition, Adult instantly understand

[1] Children who are just learning, need repetition and step-by-step instructions. They take time to remember and process a new task
[2] Unlike an adults who will continue to act after it is taught,

But parents always forget about that, and sometimes parents’ patience is tested when they forget simple things and need guidance for the similar task. “I’ve told you just now, don’t you remember that”

Children attention span is short, Adult is longer
[1] The longest is 5minutes, children attention’s span is short and love to do multiple things in one time. If you read with your most attractive voice for example, they still not interested to wait until first page is finish and move to next page of story book

[2] Adult can spend like 1hours to read book or updating FB. uhukkssss

But parents sometimes forget that, and scold their children for not sit still and listening to their story. Then become worst, when they blame themselves for not having narrative talent. “

Playing is Children learning process, Experience is Adult learning process
[1] Its undoubted that children love to play, They play most of the time, the moment they wake up until they doze off, that how they learn new thing. Children is learning through play. Through play, children develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence that required to engage in new experiences and environments

[2] While adult, learn through experience. Adult make decision and solve the problem in order to use the new ideas gained from the experience.

But parents sometimes forget that, too much play time is not good and they prefer children to get involve and help in more adult activities like gardening, painting, clean up the mess and do something with extrinsic goals

HUKM’s Pediatrics Playroom

1st word : WOW
2nd word : Bestnya
3rd word : 1 month stay pun ok, if playroom dier  cam gini.. uhukkk

I never been in the hospital that have a big playroom fully occupied with everything that kids love. Normally, there only 1 big slide with finger-counted development toys provided. But at HUKM, its totally different. Keep on saying Wow and Bestnya and also give few idea how to organize always-messy Amirul’s toys at home. While Amirul keep telling me, “Mami, nanti amik Widad yer, Widad pun nak main playground gak”. Brotherly love

[1] 1/2 staffs will be in charge for this playroom. They can take care of your kid if you need to go somewhere else or settle hospital matters. They are well trained, so no need to worry to leave your kid there. I did and Amirul was happy there. She also responsible to handle the daily activities, clean the toys,

[2] Books and magazines , soft toys, push car, tv, tables and chair. All the items inside this playroom are donated by NGO and its very in tip top condition, well maintained and very clean. Look at the above photo. The playroom’s assistance cleaning the toys using wet cloth and with the help of tooth pick, to clean the smaller parts. She said this to me, when i stared at her with frown face. “Kena la bersih btl2 semua toys ni, karang budak2 masuk mulut, lambat sihat dorang ni. kesian tau.”

Soft Toys area

Plenty of books and magazines, comic to select

Activity area

Look at the toys, no wonder Amirul don’t want to go back to the ward

[3] Different activities will be held each day. Colouring contest, craft, mathematics,. The patients won’t get bored, will be entertain with the activities provided and fully occupied while being warded here. Not only the kids, mummy also have magazines, tv and piano to play as well. Both kids and parent are happy!!!!

happy face. He doesn’t know that he need to fasting before the surgery on the next day.
No foods and drink and make him understand what “puasa/fasting” is so much difficult than i ever thought.

Extended Breastfeeding When Do You Stop

“Para ibu hendaklah menyusukan anak-anaknya selama dua tahun penuh, yaitu bagi yang ingin menyempurnakan penyusuan.”(Al-Baqarah : 233) [source : Halaqah.net]

According to surah Al-Baqarah : 233, A mother shall breastfeed their children for whole 2 years, for whoever desires to complete the term

[1] As for me, I’m still breastfeed Widad although she already 2Y 3M old. I’d try to wean her but she never let my breast off and away from her side.

[2] I’m planning to wean Widad, but the plan with no action is mean nothing at all. I want  Widad to wean off slowly and naturally.

Why I still Breastfeed Widad

[3] I love the moment when Widad lay down on my lap and her hand touching my face. The world is only us.

[4] I love the sound of gulp gulp gulp coming out while nursing her. I justify myself that I had satisfy Widad’s nutritional and emotional needs

[5] I love the attachment between me and Widad. Amirul is Mummy’s boy, while Widad is Daddy’s girl. So while nursing her, is the moment where she snug me comfortably

[6] I love to become Widad’s soother whenever she is afraid of something. Daddy wanna scold her, she immediately ask for milk, Abang scold her still me, heard the loud thunder, run for me and suckle my breast. I’m really her soother.

So when Do I wean??
Erhm, maybe next year, or I should conceive and tell her ” Adik, little baby want to drink milk, pity her if you drink all Mummy’s milk”

Syok kan dier dok drink milk Mummy

Hospital Trip : Excision of Right Brachial Cyst/Sinus @ HUKM

What is Excision of Right Brachial Cyst/Sinus???

A cyst is a swelling with liquid inside it. The liquid in your cyst comes from the lining of the swelling. The lining is made from tissues, which were connected with your tonsil area before you were born. It is not a serious swelling.A branchial cyst is a swelling in the neck, which has fluid inside it [privatehealth.uk]
